ALMAJIRI PROGRAM
The term "Almajiri" refers to children in northern Nigeria who pursue Islamic education through a traditional system known as Tsangaya. While the system boasts a rich history of scholarship and spiritual development, it has faced challenges in recent times, raising concerns about child welfare, access to basic education, and vulnerability to exploitation.Understanding the Challenges:
- Poverty and vulnerability: Many Almajiri children come from impoverished backgrounds, leading to dependence on begging for basic necessities. This exposes them to risks of exploitation and health hazards.
- Limited access to formal education: The focus on Islamic studies often neglects secular subjects like mathematics, science, and English, hindering future employment prospects and social mobility.
- Poor living conditions: Overcrowded and inadequate accommodations in Tsangaya schools can compromise hygiene and well-being.
